Brief History
Swoyersville Volunteer Hose Company #1 was organized in 1914 under the name Swoyerville Borough Hose Company #1. Since then, we have gone through hard times, but now are expanding to fit our citizens needs. In the early 80's, we were experiencing some hard times. As a company that get's little if any funding from the borough, we look to the citizens of the town to help support us through fund drives. At the time we weren't getting adequiate funding needed to keep the company afloat. This almost forced us to close our doors for good. With 2 other fire departments in the borough, our concilmen decided that we had enough fire support and wound't help us with any financing. Fortunately we managed to get the bank to work with us, and be able to keep serving the community. Then, in 1996, we were able to bring our heads above water, and came completely out of our financial debt that we were in. Now, we have another thing that still needed to be solved. Our aging pumper, a 1967 American LaFrance, was deteriorating to the point where we didn't know how much longer we could run it. So, we decided to start shopping for a new piece. After assembling a commitee to oversee the process of selecting the right piece of apparatus to fit our needs, we finally came down with a decision and the membership agreed. From selecting the right equipment needed to measuring the size to make sure the pumper would fit in the building, we came up with the perfect piece of apparatus, a 1996 Pierce Quantum. Well, we did it, delivery was set for September 1996. We anxiously waited for the arrival of our new piece, while at the same time tried to sell our old engine. We took delivery of our new engine in early September of 1996. The Quantum has a 2000 GPM SINGLE stage Waterous pump, carries about 1500 feet of 5" supply line, 4 crosslays of 1 3/4" hose line, and an electronical governor. A few months later, we decided that we could serve the community a little more. Since then, our membership has expanded and our funds are increasing. We would like to thank the citizens of Swoyersville Borough, PA. Without you, none of this would be possible. |
